Intensity Mapping
an installation by Steven Doughty & Jon Bonner
This installation is part experiment in psychophysics and part examination of data driven models. Magnitude estimation is a universal ability for humans to apply an accurate number to a stimulus, when a reference is presented. Such as, on a scale one to ten, one being ice cream and ten being a cup of coffee. What is the temperature outside?. Our installation “Intensity Mapping” is an effort to work this process in reverse and generate unique “Maps” of select cities. We took the data generated by different aspects of metropolitan areas, generated a reference (Utopias), and then applied our intuitive feelings and ideas about that number to develop a class of similar and thought provoking objects.
